Sprite Work

From scratch.

Early concept. I'm thinking about redoing it in 1:2 scale for the retro look.

Something I did for Mike!

Him and a co-worker for his website, though I'm not sure if he's still interested...

Anyway. I know a couple of you have at least some sort of latent interest in the style, and I was looking for tips and critique.

The scarf one is pretty damn awesome.

The bigger one (who I shall refer to as "Trenchcoat Guy") looks good as well, but the head is a little disproportionately small. It might be that the collar is too large, though, I can't decide. Maybe try shrinking the collar, and if that doesn't work, enlarging the head.

Also, his leg (visible under the trenchcoat) looks a little too long.

Trenchy's got a lot of layers. He has leather, a full plate of ebony, and the trenchcoat and scarf over top, which is why I was trying to make him look extremely broad. He's very heavy and slow. Does that make it a bit more reasonable or should the head be larger regardless?

And which leg? The left is tricky because it's about perspective. It's not coming straight out the back, it's coming out a bit towards you. So I had to put the foot a little further down.

Done any complex animating before? I finished half of Trenchy's run, and it doesn't look too bad but it's not quite as smooth as say Castlevania (the new ones).

But thank you bunches for your kind words!

Yeah, the left leg. But the problem I had with it wasn't really anything to do with perspective.

Note the area I circled. I think you need to see more of his body there, rather than his leg. Otherwise the leg looks a little too long, at least to me. Optionally, you could raise the top half of the sprite a few pixels. It's just that the torso-to-leg ratio seems off.

I've never actually done full-fledged animation, just stationary sprites.

And the head's fine, as long as you were going for the omgthecoatiseatingme bulky look. ^^
